Tardebigge Sunday 3 September 2017

You may recall that last week I posted about pieces of pipe sticking out of the roof in Froghall Tunnel which I contacted CRT about, well I have had a reply and they were for the bats to enter and leave their roost while the tunnel brickwork was being re-pointed. I hope the bats realised that the white plastic pipe was for them to use to go home

Yesterday after noon and early evening the weather was quite summer like, as well as 3 Black Prince Narrowboats coming by these came by as well, I will leave you to make your own judgments on it.DSCF8936

Diner was taken in The Queens Head, well I had been using their free WiFi all afternoon. It seems the in thing this year is to have a tipi in the garden for special events. We tried to book a table but the place was heaving with a car park full of Mercs and Audis, it definitely seems to be the place to go in the area. We had our pizzas sat in the bar with a pint of Doom Bar.
This morning a boat went up the locks very early, 2 of the Black Prince boats went up yesterday afternoon, they had been told there were plenty of places to moor in the flight. The third Black Prince boat went up this morning as well and a boat coming down at about 9am. There was no other movement until we set off at 10. It was raining when we woke up and its still raining now.

The first two locks were with us but then our luck ran out, we did meet a couple of boats about half way up the flight. DSCF8937

Looking at this paddle gear I wonder how many cotton lines ran over it to cut that grove.

We found the locks in good condition and all the paddle gear worked well, a bit different from the horror stories another boat we met earlier had told us about them.

We haven't travelled far today, only 2 miles in the rain, but it was warm, to warm for a coat so I just got wet.
We got a system going, Diana would walk to the lock in front and set it waiting at the bottom gate until I was in the lock, she then closed up and walked up to the next lock to repeat the operation. I would climb out of the lock, and draw the top paddles, open the gate, move the boat out before closing up and moving to the next lock which was now sitting ready for me.

Today's journey map 192 miles, 29 locks in 4 hours.
