Wed 16 Feb Onley

I could have posted to say we woke to bright sunshine but that would be a lie, as a couple of boats went by before the sun was up, however when we got up it was bright sun. In light of the forecast for today we set off at 9.30, just as the boat ahead was getting ready. We did see him behind us as we left the woods but we were traveling faster than him and soon pulled away, well we did till we caught up with another boat so we had a well spaced convoy of 3. The boat following us pulled in at the yard just before Newbold tunnel and the one ahead at the first Rugby aqueduct.
We arrived at the bottom of the Hillmorton locks just as a pair were coming down the near side lock, the motor was in the cheeks and the butty on its way down. In the offside a boat was going up so I pulled into the mouth of the offside lock and waited until the pair were on their way. As we worked up the top lock another train full of cars, vans and trucks went by. By now the sun had left us and the wind freshening so once clear of the Barby Straight we looked for a mooring for the night.DSCF6204 I was quite surprised to find I was doing 4mph to wards the end of the straight. We had to go round a couple of bends before we came to an empty length of piling to moor against. Already the wind is steady 33kph and has been up to almost 50kph.

Today's journeyMap16 12½ miles, 3 locks in 4 hours.
